Trademark Registration : Disney investigating Deadmau5

Disney is investigating a trademark registration filed by Deadmau5, a electronic dance music producer and performer.

Deadmau5, pronounced as “dead mouse,” is the stage name of Joel Zimmerman. According to Billboard.com, Zimmerman’s Ronica Holdings Limited applied for a trademark last year for a caricature of a mouse head with black ears, black face and white eyes and mouth.

The registration would cover merchandise and other promotional materials for Deadmau5.

Billboard reported that Disney is currently investigating the filing, as it is similar to the iconic Mickey Mouse head that is synonymous with the Disney name. According to the report, Disney could argue that the Deadmau5 mark is misleading and could cause confusion in terms of branding.

Disney has been granted a 90-day period to investigate the claim and file a notice of opposition.
